JYP announced on Friday that it will retire the jersey number 15 of club legend Juha-Pekka Hytönen. Hytönen’s jersey will be raised to the ceiling of the LähiTapiola Arena on Saturday, February 7, during the JYP-HIFK match.

Hytönen, 44, is a product of JYP. He represented only JYP in the Liiga, playing a total of 810 regular season games (174+231=405) and 91 playoff games (18+30=48) over 16 different seasons.

Hytönen won two Finnish championships with JYP in 2009 and 2012, as well as a CHL championship in 2018. He served as the team’s captain for nine seasons. Hytönen ended his playing career in 2022 wearing the JYP jersey.

– Juha-Pekka Hytönen is one of the biggest stars in JYP’s club history. During his playing career, he demonstrated unwavering commitment to JYP. Hytönen’s role in all three championships won by JYP has been significant, commented JYP’s CEO Risto Korpela in the club’s press release.

– The retirement of Hytönen’s jersey number is a tribute to the career of a club legend. Throughout his playing career, Hytönen has left a lasting mark on JYP’s club history, Korpela continues.

Hytönen played in four World Championships with the Lions. Additionally, he played one season in the KHL, three seasons in Switzerland, and one season in Austria.

After his playing career, Hytönen moved into coaching. He first served as an assistant coach for JYP’s U20 team for two seasons and as an assistant coach for the Little Lions for one season. Currently, he is in his third season as an assistant coach for HC Ajoie in the Swiss top league.
