Philadelphia Flyers’ Russian super prospect Matvei Mitshkov, 21, is preparing for his third NHL season. Mitshkov has trained this summer with a completely different attitude than a year ago.

Mitshkov played 80 games in his NHL rookie season, recording 26+37=63 points. Last season, expectations were higher for him, but his point total after 81 games was 20+31=51. In the playoffs, Mitshkov recorded only one assist in eight games and was also out of the lineup for two games.

A year ago, it was reported that Mitshkov arrived at the NHL training camp in poor physical condition. Now, the forward has skipped his summer vacation and has been training up to three times a day.

– There was no vacation at all because an important season is ahead. I need to play well; I want that myself. So I have to keep my body in good shape all the time, Mitshkov said in an interview with RG.

– What did I learn from last season? That you have to prepare well for the season and not take it lightly, Mitshkov states.

The Flyers sent their own coach to Russia to oversee Mitshkov’s training. They worked together for two weeks and trained three times a day. The morning schedule included gym and strength training, then they went on the ice, and in the evening, there was another practice focused on physical conditioning.

Mitshkov is the Flyers’ seventh overall pick in the first round of the 2023 draft.
