Pelicans grabbed a powerhouse from Sweden
Carl-Johan Lerby returns to the League. Pelicans confirmed on Thursday that they have signed a one-year contract with the 29-year-old Swedish defender.
Lerby moves to Lahti from HC Kalmar, which plays in Sweden’s second-highest league, HockeyAllsvenskan, where he was one of the team’s most effective defenders. In the season before last, the Swede recorded 32 points (10+22) in 46 games. Last season, he had 20 points (6+14) in 33 games.
Pelicans’ sports director Jarkko Oikarinen Holm knows Lerby from their time in Kalmar and believes the defender will bring experience and stability to the team.
– Lerby is an experienced defender who brings us confidence and competitiveness. I had the opportunity to work with him earlier in Kalmar, so I know well what kind of player and person he is. We believe he will fit well into our team and add important value to our daily routine with his experience, Oikarinen Holm says in the club’s statement.
Lerby played 20 games for Sport in the 2023–24 season, recording 4 points (1+3).
The Swedish defender also has 250 SHL regular season games under his belt, so Pelicans is gaining a lot of experience from the top level in Europe.
