Tappara made a bold move – a big piece was found for the defense
Tappara has made a new player acquisition for its defense. The club has signed a one-year contract with Swedish defenseman Olle Strandell.
The 26-year-old Strandell’s rise to higher league levels has been rapid. In the 2021–22 season, the defenseman played in Sweden’s third-highest league, HockeyEttan, but in just a few years he has risen to a significant role in the SHL.
Last season, Strandell took the biggest developmental step of his career so far. He represented Leksands IF in 52 games and achieved his record performance in the SHL, accumulating 5+14=19 points.
At the same time, Strandell was Leksand’s most effective defenseman.
The defenseman’s rise to becoming an SHL player happened gradually. In the 2023–24 season, he played his first games at the top league level with HV71, and in the following season, he took on even greater responsibility in Leksand.
During last season, Strandell also took on responsibilities in Leksand’s top power play. In total, he has played 102 games in the SHL, where he has scored 23 points (6+17).
Tappara’s GM Janne Vuorinen states that the club is pleased with the acquisition of the new defenseman.
– Strandell is a versatile two-way defenseman who moves well and handles the puck smoothly. Olle has taken good steps as a player season by season, and last season he secured a spot on Leksand’s top power play, even though his profile is more in two-way play. We are very pleased to have him in the Tappara jersey, Vuorinen smiled in a statement.
