The Little Lions’ medal dreams crushed – bitter defeat in the World Cup quarter-finals
The Little Lions’ journey in the under-18 ice hockey World Championships ended on Wednesday in a harsh manner, as they lost in the quarter-finals to the Czech Republic with a score of 1-2.
At the same time, the dark streak continued: the Little Lions will be outside the medal games for the fourth consecutive year.
The Czech Republic scored the opening goal of the quarter-final match when Adam Klaus put his team ahead in the eighth minute of the first period.
Finland’s hope for a continuation spot was revived in the second period when TPS’s prospect Paavo Fugleberg equalized on a power play with an assist from Oliver Suvanto.
In the final minute of the second period, a cold shower was poured over the Little Lions when Tadeas Cifka scored the last goal of the match, making it 2-1.
The Little Lions’ last World Championship medal was in 2022, when Finland took bronze. The most recent championship came in 2018. In total, Finland has celebrated its world championship in this age group four times.
For the Czech Republic, a place in the medal games is a rare treat. The country last medaled in 2006, when they were awarded bronze. The Czech Republic has never won gold at the U18 level.
