The goalkeeper legend made a tough decision – signed a long extension at the age of 39
One of the biggest names in Swiss ice hockey goaltending, Leonardo Genoni, is not even close to ending his career yet.
Having just turned 39, Genoni has signed a three-year extension with EV Zug. Since the goaltender’s current contract still covers this season, the new deal, which will come into effect next autumn, will keep the veteran in Zug until the spring of 2030.
By the end of the contract, Genoni will already be 42 years old.
The veteran goalie assures that he still has the energy to play at a high level.
– I am in top shape, I want to continue playing ice hockey at the highest level, and I feel the trust and desire of the EVZ management to rely on me completely in the future as well. Together with the team, I am highly motivated to succeed again in the coming seasons, and I want to achieve a lot more in Zug, Genoni commented on his long extension.
Genoni has achieved true legend status in Switzerland. He has celebrated the national league championship a remarkable seven times in his career.
His resume with the national team is also exceptionally impressive. Genoni has represented Switzerland in 12 World Championships and has earned four silver medals in them.
One of the toughest personal achievements of his career came at the 2025 World Championships. Genoni was named the best goaltender of the tournament and the most valuable player of the competition.
