The door to the NHL opened for Patrik Laine – negotiations have begun!
Patrik Laine’s long wait for an NHL contract may take a new turn. The Finnish forward has emerged as a potential addition for the Ottawa Senators.
A reporter closely following the Senators, Bruce Garrioch reports that Laine’s representatives have been in contact with the team. The parties have also had preliminary discussions, but no contract has been finalized.
A spot opened up in Ottawa’s offense when William Eklund was injured against the Philadelphia Flyers on October 9. The Swedish player, suffering from an ankle injury, is expected to be sidelined for 10–12 weeks.
Garrioch sees Laine as a reinforcement for Ottawa’s poorly functioning power play. The Senators’ power play has been the sixth weakest in the NHL at the start of the season, with a success rate of 12.5 percent.
The 28-year-old Laine has been without a team for the entire start of the season. His contract with the Montreal Canadiens ended last season, and no new employer has been found so far.
