The dispute between the Winnipeg Jets and Connor Hellebuyck has taken a new turn. The NHL team may find itself in a peculiar situation where it pays its superstar’s salary even though he is not playing for the team.

Sportsnet reporter Elliotte Friedman reports that Hellebuyck’s suspension ends on Friday, October 23. The American, who has been named the NHL’s best goaltender three times, could then return to the Winnipeg roster.

Hellebuyck demanded a trade away from Winnipeg in the summer and did not report to the team’s training camp in the fall. The Jets responded by placing the 33-year-old goaltender on unpaid leave.

However, the situation has now changed. According to Friedman, Hellebuyck informed the team before the NHL season began that he wanted to return to the team.

That, however, does not mean that Winnipeg will take him back.

– One possibility is that the Jets pay him to stay at home, Friedman writes.

– I don’t believe anyone wants that – neither Hellebuyck, the Jets, the players, nor the fans. But that situation may arise next week if a trade does not materialize.

Trading Hellebuyck is not straightforward. His contract, which runs until 2031, includes a full no-trade clause and a $8.5 million annual salary cap hit.

The suspension has also been costly for Hellebuyck. He has already lost over $720,000 in salary during this time.
