HIFK fired head coach Olli Jokinen, his assistants Anders Carlsson and Mika Hyvärinen, as well as goaltending coach Riku Helenius on Wednesday.

Swede “Masken” Carlsson commented on his departure to the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. He stated that the firing did not come as a surprise.

– It was quite expected. We haven’t had much luck with injuries or results. This is part of the business, so I take it calmly, Carlsson told Aftonbladet.

Jokinen and his coaching staff were dismissed due to poor results. The team had only collected 15 points from 14 games and had fallen to 15th place in the league standings.

Carlsson joined HIFK’s coaching staff for this season. However, his tenure at the club was very short. Carlsson had strongly supported Jokinen.

– I am sad for Olli, as he is a hell of a good coach. He hasn’t really had the opportunity to play the kind of hockey we would like, because we have had so many injuries. It’s hard to get results then, Carlsson said.

HIFK appointed Tommi Miettinen as the new head coach to replace Jokinen. His coaching team includes Ville Viitaluoma and Jan Lundell.
