New information about Macklin Celebrini’s big contract – money was left on the table
The San Jose Sharks announced on Wednesday that they have signed a five-year contract worth a total of 94 million dollars with their superstar Macklin Celebrini. The contract, which takes effect in a year, guarantees Celebrini an annual salary of 18.8 million dollars, making him the highest-paid player in the NHL.
New information has emerged regarding Celebrini’s contract situation. Sharks GM Mike Grier stated that the team would have been willing to pay Celebrini the maximum salary, and according to Grier, Celebrini would have had every right to ask for it.
The maximum salary for a single player is 20% of the NHL’s salary cap. Next season, the NHL salary cap will be 104 million dollars, meaning Celebrini could have asked for up to 20.8 million dollars in annual salary. However, he decided to leave some money on the table.
– We are very grateful that he was willing to give us some flexibility by taking a little less and leaving money on the table to help us continue developing our team, Grier said.
Celebrini, 20, finished fourth in the NHL scoring race last season. He recorded 82 games with a total of 45+70=115 points.
