Russia’s return to international ice hockey tournaments has faced a significant setback.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Tuesday that Russia will not be allowed to participate in the under-20 World Championships starting in December. The tournament will be held in Edmonton and Red Deer, Canada, starting December 26.

Carney made the country’s position clear at a press conference held in Antigua.

– As long as Russia and Belarus support this illegal, baseless, and horrific war in Ukraine, their athletes will not compete as representatives of their countries in Canada, Carney stated.

– If you are specifically asking about the youth World Championships, the Russians will not be there.

Canada’s announcement is a significant turn in the dispute that has escalated in recent days. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled last Friday that Russia should be reinstated in international ice hockey tournaments. The decision first affected the youth World Championships.

The ruling sparked massive opposition, especially in Europe. Finland announced its opposition to Russia’s return and was supported by Sweden, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Norway, and Denmark.

The countries have stated that their national teams will not agree to play against Russia as long as the war in Ukraine continues.

The Canadian government, in turn, plans to use the country’s immigration laws to prevent the participation of Russian and Belarusian national teams in competitions held in Canada.

Russia and Belarus have been barred from international ice hockey since the spring of 2022.
