The return of Russia to the ice hockey World Championships still faces increasing opposition. The Norwegian Ice Hockey Federation announced on Tuesday that the national team will not agree to play against Russia in the 2027 World Championship.

According to the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet, the decision is primarily based on concerns regarding the safety of players and team staff.

The Norwegian Ice Hockey Federation believes that facing Russia could expose team members to significant security risks.

– We are focusing on their mental health, well-being, and personal safety, the federation justifies its decision.

Norway has informed the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF of its decision. The country intends to play its other World Championship matches as usual.

Finland also announced on Monday that it would refuse to play against Russia.

Russia’s potential return to the World Championships is based on the ruling of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last Friday. Russia has been banned from international ice hockey tournaments since 2022.

The situation has also raised questions about the organization of the 2027 World Championships. The president of the German Ice Hockey Federation, Frank H. Lutz, has even hinted at the possibility of giving up hosting the tournament.
