A different statement echoed from one country – the prime minister welcomed Russia to the World Championships!
The Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is positive about Russia’s return to international ice hockey tournaments.
Fico expressed his satisfaction with the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which allows Russian teams to return to international ice hockey competitions. This was reported by the Czech iDNES.cz.
According to Fico, the sporting value of ice hockey championships suffers if the Russian players, who are among the best in the world, are not allowed to participate in the tournaments.
– I have always opposed mixing sports with politics. I have also always asked what the value of a gold medal is if you do not have to beat Russian hockey players, who are undoubtedly among the best in the world, to win it, Fico said in a video posted on Facebook.
The Slovak Prime Minister’s view clearly differs from that of several other European countries. At least Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark have already announced that their national teams will not play against Russia in the World Championships, even if the Russians are accepted back into the tournaments.
