The possible return of Russia to the ice hockey World Championships continues to face broader opposition. In addition to Finland and Norway, now Sweden and Denmark have also announced that their national teams will not agree to play against Russia.

The board of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association has made an official decision on the matter. The association’s chairman Anders Larsson confirms that Tre Kronor does not intend to face Russia in upcoming World Championship tournaments.

According to Larsson, Sweden has been in close discussion about the situation with other countries, especially the Nordic countries. Sweden’s position is clear: Russia’s participation in international ice hockey cannot be accepted as long as the country’s offensive war in Ukraine continues.

However, Sweden’s decision does not mean that the country will withdraw from the World Championships due to Russia’s possible participation. Sweden intends to participate in the tournaments but refuses to play against Russia.

Denmark has also joined the ranks of countries opposing Russia. The chairman of the Danish Ice Hockey Association Henrik Bach Nielsen confirmed the decision.

– We have decided that we will not play against Russia. We have also informed the IIHF board of our decision in Zurich. It is about the safety and sense of security for all of us. This concerns players, fans, and sponsors alike, Bach Nielsen explains.

Denmark also does not intend to boycott the entire World Championship tournament. The team will participate in the tournament held in Germany but will not agree to face Russia.
