The men’s ice hockey Olympic tournament begins in Milan on Wednesday, February 11. Before the tournament starts, SuomiKiekko previews the Olympics by highlighting the best countries for each position.

First up are five countries with the best offensive lineups for the Olympics.

5. Czech Republic

The Czech Republic’s offense is no longer what it was during the 2010 and 2014 Olympics. Today, the Czech team has only three star forwards in the NHL: Boston Bruins’ David Pastrnak, Colorado Avalanche’s Martin Necas, and Vegas Golden Knights’ Tomas Hertl. Among this trio, Pastrnak is a true superstar and would fit into any country’s top line.

Outside of these three top players, the level drops significantly. The Czech offense includes as many as five players from the domestic league, two from Switzerland, and one from Sweden. The most interesting name is the 40-year-old Roman Cervenka. Despite his age, Cervenka has consistently performed well for the Czech national team. His latest performance was in the spring 2025 World Championships, where the veteran forward scored 6+8=14 points in eight games.

4. Finland

Finland’s offensive lineup is clearly better than that of the Czech Republic. Mikko Rantanen is a superstar at the NHL level, Roope Hintz and Sebastian Aho are top centers in the NHL, and Artturi Lehkonen is also a top-line forward in the NHL. Anton Lundell, Eeli Tolvanen, and Erik Haula bring both skill and physicality to Finland’s lower lines. There are so many good players available for the lower lines that some strong names will inevitably be left out of the lineup.

Finland’s offensive material is both deep and sharp at the top. If Aleksander Barkov were healthy and able to participate in the tournament, the Lions would be one spot higher on this list.

3. Sweden

Sweden’s offensive lineup is not as deep as Finland’s, and its third and fourth lines do not feature players of the same quality. However, the difference in the level of the top two lines slightly tilts the comparison in favor of Sweden. Lucas Raymond, Mika Zibanejad, William Nylander, Filip Forsberg, Adrian Kempe, and Jesper Bratt is a roster that Finland cannot match.

A big question mark is who will do the dirty work for Sweden, win pucks, and defend in tight moments? In practice, the fourth line has included Gabriel Landeskog, Pontus Holmberg, and Alexander Wennberg, with Marcus Johansson rotating in. Neither of the latter two is a workhorse for the fourth line; on the contrary, Holmberg does not impress as a fourth-line center either.

2. United States

The United States does not have as many superstars as many other countries. However, the team surpasses Finland and Sweden in the number of star players. Jack Eichel, Kyle Connor, Matt Boldy, Jake Guentzel, and Tage Thompson have all played at a point-per-game pace in the NHL this season.

Unlike the Swedish team, the United States also has players for all roles. Auston Matthews is a sniper, the Tkachuk brothers are physical agitators, and Dylan Larkin is an excellent two-way center. Moreover, each of these players knows how to score points, and a lot.

1. Canada

Canada’s offense features two of the world’s best players: Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid and Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon. San Jose Sharks’ Macklin Celebrini is a future superstar. He has scored 28+53=81 points in 55 games with a weak team this season. And Celebrini is only 19 years old!

There are no weaknesses in Canada’s offense. Even the fourth line would be top-line quality on many NHL teams. Canada’s Olympic team has skill, size, and speed. With such player material, it is no wonder that Canada is also the favorite to win the Olympics.
