The New York Islanders will have to manage the rest of the season without their long-term star forward Kyle Palmieri.

Palmieri’s left anterior cruciate ligament was torn in the game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night. According to a statement released by the team on Saturday evening, Palmieri’s recovery time is estimated to be 6-8 months, which means the 34-year-old’s season is over.

Palmieri showed considerable fighting spirit even at the moment of injury, as he managed to steal the puck from the Flyers’ defense while limping to the bench and assisted in his team’s goal before leaving in pain for the locker room.

Palmieri is the Islanders’ fourth most effective scorer of the early season with 18 points in 25 games (6+12=18).

This injury is already the second major setback for the Islanders within a week. One of the team’s trusted defensemen, Aleksandr Romanov, is also expected to miss the rest of the season after he injured his shoulder due to a hit from Mikko Rantanen.
