NHL calls – Carolina has added a Finnish defenseman to its roster
The Carolina Hurricanes have called up Juuso Välimäki to their NHL roster. The 27-year-old defenseman joins the team from AHL affiliate Chicago Wolves.
This season, Välimäki has played two games in the minors. The last time the Finnish player was seen in the NHL was during the 2024–25 season.
The Hurricanes acquired Välimäki in January 2026. In the summer, the partnership continued when the parties signed a one-year contract. Välimäki has not yet played any NHL games in a Carolina jersey.
Last season, Välimäki had a strong performance in the AHL. In 27 regular season games with the Tucson Roadrunners and Chicago Wolves, he recorded 7 goals and 16 assists for a total of 23 points. As Chicago advanced to the Calder Cup finals, Välimäki collected 14 points with 5 goals and 9 assists in 21 playoff games.
Välimäki has accumulated NHL experience with a total of 271 regular season games. He has represented the Calgary Flames, Arizona Coyotes, and Utah, scoring a total of 11 goals and 61 assists for 72 points.
Calgary selected Välimäki in the first round of the 2017 NHL Draft with the 16th overall pick.
