Tough capture! The Mestis team signed a former Liiga captain
The team playing in Mestis, Imatran Ketterä, strengthens its roster with a notable forward as 36-year-old Niklas Appelgren joins the team. The club announced on Thursday that it has signed a weekly contract with the forward.
Appelgren returns to Imatra after more than a decade. He played for Ketterä during the 2013–2014 season when the team was in the Suomi series. At that time, Appelgren, who enjoyed playing as the center forward of the first line, recorded impressive stats of 22+24=46.
Having grown up in KooKoo, he has since built a long career in the Liiga. Appelgren has played 432 regular season games in the Liiga and recorded stats of 51+59=110. He has playoff experience at the top level from 46 games.
In the Liiga, Appelgren has played for Sport, Ässät, and SaiPa. In Pori, he wore the captain’s C letter from 2019 to 2021, after which he was part of SaiPa’s alternate captaincy from 2021 to 2026.
Last season, Appelgren represented SaiPa in 47 regular season games and collected points of 4+8=12.
Appelgren’s strengths include diligent defensive play, strong work ethic, and penalty killing.
Ketterä is currently sitting at the bottom of the Mestis league table. It has only gathered six points from its eight games.
