After the first local match in Helsinki, HIFK’s head coach Olli Jokinen describes the match as being different from his playing career.

– Back when I played local games, there was no shouting, we just played and played hard, Olli Jokinen said after the lost local match.

– This was quite a different local match than the ones I have been in, Jokinen continues.

The first local match in Helsinki in twelve years ended bleakly for HIFK, as Jokerit’s Aleksander Forsund secured the home team’s victory in overtime.

– We completely lacked the courage to play. We also want to progress by passing like all other teams, but if a player’s puck-handling decisions are what they are, then it looks like this. This was not close to the pace and demands of the game that we played against JYP two weeks ago, Jokinen commented after the match.

Jokerit were ahead of HIFK in terms of gameplay for most of the match. The expected goals for Jokerit were over five compared to HIFK’s just over one. Hugo Alnefelt’s 36 saves and Daniel Mäkiahon’s equalizing goal 44 seconds before the end of the match gave the visitors a point to take home to Nordiks.

– You have to give credit to the opponent when it’s due, but they weren’t that good to make us look like that, Jokinen says.

The next matches for Jokerit and HIFK are on Saturday, when Ilves arrives at Veikkaus Arena and KalPa at Helsinki Ice Hall. The next local match will be hosted by HIFK on November 11, 2026.
