NHL: a surprise shake-up happened – a top name returns from retirement!
The Columbus Blue Jackets have parted ways with head coach Dean Evason and assistant coach Steve McCarthy.
GM Don Waddell justified the decision by the team’s poor performance. Columbus is currently at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, six points away from a playoff spot.
– This season has been frustrating for all of us, and we are not playing at the level we expect. The responsibility lies with all of us, myself included, and while the decision was not easy, it had to be made now, Waddell said in a statement.
The Blue Jackets have named Rick Bowness as their new head coach. Bowness led the Winnipeg Jets from 2022 to 2024 and took the team to the playoffs twice in a row. The veteran coach, who turns 71 on January 25, had already retired but is now making a surprising return to coaching.
– Bowness is an immensely experienced and respected coach. His teams play structurally and defend well, and we believe he is the right person to get the best out of us, Waddell commented on the new coaching hire.
