Buffalo Sabres’ Konsta Helenius made his breakthrough into the consciousness of Finnish hockey fans last season, especially during the spring World Championships, where the 20-year-old talent secured the championship for the Lions with his overtime goal.

In the upcoming season, the forward aims to solidify his position in the NHL roster orchestrated by Jarmo Kekäläinen of the Sabres.

The team’s veteran head coach Lindy Ruff is, at least based on the start of training camp, convinced of the Finnish gem’s potential to step into a significant role in the NHL.

– Helenius performed well in last season’s playoffs and also played well when he got the chance during the regular season.

– By all accounts, he clearly had a very good summer behind him. He was supposed to gain more strength, and now he looks stronger, Ruff praises.

– Does that make him a player who can make a difference against the opponent every night? We have four or five players who belong to this same group, Ruff reminds.

Helenius is part of the Sabres’ young forward group, from which the team believes a replacement for the Washington Capitals’ summer departure Alex Tuch can be found.

Fundamentally, Helenius is competing for the same minutes as Noah Östlund, Jiri Kulich, Jack Quinn, and Josh Doan.
