Kalervo Kummola with strict words about Finland’s NHL draft: “Time to wake up”
The 2025 NHL Draft is shaping up to be exceptionally lean in terms of Finnish picks. Not a single Finn was drafted in the first round, and it’s not a given that there will be picks in the second or third round either.
Finland’s poor success in draft events has been ongoing for some time. Now even the former chairman of the Finnish Ice Hockey Association, Kalervo Kummola, has spoken out on the matter.
“This is the third time this decade that no Finnish player has been drafted in the 1st round of the NHL. It’s time to wake up. If the Finnish Elite League and junior leagues are always run to benefit the weakest, soon everyone will be weak,” Kummola writes.
In the 2020s, only five Finns have been drafted in the first round. The lowest number among them belongs to Anton Lundell, who was drafted in 2020 at number 12.
