Detroit Red Wings star forward Dylan Larkin’s long-desired move took a step forward on Thursday in the NHL.

Red Wings has decided to leave their former captain out of games during trade negotiations.

The team’s head coach Todd McLellan confirmed on Thursday that Larkin will not play in the team’s next game against the Chicago Blackhawks. According to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, Detroit’s plan is to keep the star center sidelined until he can be traded.

Larkin requested a trade from Detroit last summer. In September, the team stripped him of the captaincy, which he had held since 2021.

Trade negotiations have intensified in recent days. According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, at least the Minnesota Wild, New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals, and Carolina Hurricanes have held discussions with Detroit.

Particularly, New Jersey has emerged at the center of trade rumors on Thursday.

Former NHL defenseman Jordan Schmaltz claims to have heard that a deal for Larkin to the Devils has already been agreed upon. However, there has been no official confirmation of this claim so far.

Minnesota has also been actively pursuing Larkin. The team is looking for reinforcement in the center position, but executing a trade would require significant compensation to Detroit.

Larkin has represented the Red Wings throughout his entire NHL career. This season, the American center has recorded 2+4=6 points in ten games.

His contract, which includes an annual salary of $8.7 million, runs through the spring of 2031.

Detroit’s interim GM Shawn Horcoff is expected to comment on Larkin’s situation perhaps as early as Thursday.
