The return of Russia to the ice hockey World Championships has sparked strong reactions in Finland. Now, the long-time powerhouse of Finnish ice hockey Kalervo Kummola has also joined the discussion.

Kummola’s attention is particularly drawn to Ukraine’s position. Russia’s potential participation in the 2027 World Championship could lead to a situation where Ukraine would have to give up its place in the tournament.

Kummola does not hide his dismay at the decision.

The whole idea is outrageous, Kummola writes on the messaging service X.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has made a ruling regarding Russia’s participation, the implications of which the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) now has to clarify.

The effects of Russia’s return on the participant countries of the 2027 World Championships have not yet been confirmed. However, the possibility of Ukraine being dropped from the A division, raised by Kummola, has emerged as one of the most talked-about consequences of the decision.
