The German Ice Hockey Federation has taken a strong stance against Russia’s return to international ice hockey tournaments.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decided on Friday that Russian national teams can again participate in international competitions during the 2026–2027 season. The decision overturned the previous stance of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).

Germany, which will host the men’s World Championship in 2027, is not satisfied with the decision. The chairman of the German Ice Hockey Federation, Frank H. Lutz, made it clear in a statement published on the federation’s website that the country’s position on Russia’s participation has not changed.

– Our position remains unchanged: we oppose the return of Russian national teams to international ice hockey tournaments. We have clearly and unequivocally expressed this to both the IIHF and CAS as a member of the IIHF, Lutz states.

Lutz explains that Russia’s participation in the 2027 World Championships would pose significant challenges for Germany.

– The decision fundamentally changes the conditions for the 2027 ice hockey World Championships to be held in Germany. Russia’s participation would have significant implications for us as the host country in terms of security, politics, and the economy.

The German Ice Hockey Federation plans to evaluate the decision together with the IIHF. It will announce the next steps later.
