Ilves’ Jaakko Lantta once again found himself in the spotlight in a controversial way during Friday’s Liiga round.

Lantta was ejected in the local match in Tampere against Tappara after a forward tackled the Juuso Nykänen of the hammer-wearing team into the boards from behind.

The incident occurred in the second period. The referees reviewed the tackle on video and handed Lantta a 5+20 minute penalty. Ilves had to play short-handed for five minutes.

Lantta had managed to score the opening goal of the match before his ejection.

Known for his tough play, ejections have become familiar to the forward over the years.

In October 2023, Lantta was ejected twice in a short span of time. First, he tackled HIFK’s Petteri Lindbohm in the knee, and a week later, he hit Sport’s Theodor Johnsson hard into the boards.

Last December, Lantta received a match penalty for kicking KooKoo’s Jesper Ahlroth in the leg. The incident also went to the Liiga’s disciplinary proceedings.

Friday’s ejection thus continues Lantta’s colorful history of misconduct on Liiga ice.
