Former ice hockey player Jere Karalahti, 50, was arrested on October 2 on suspicion of a serious drug offense.

There has now been a new development in the case of Karalahti’s arrest. Ilta-Sanomat reports that Karalahti’s legal advisor Mikko Ruuttunen has requested a re-evaluation of the detention period, which will be held on Thursday at 11:15 AM.

A re-evaluation can be arranged since Karalahti has been in pre-trial detention for two weeks. The re-evaluation is a court procedure that assesses whether the conditions for detention still exist.

In practice, Karalahti wants to be released from pre-trial detention. If there are no longer grounds for detention, he will be released. If Karalahti is not released on Thursday, he can request a new re-evaluation again in two weeks.

The Helsinki District Court’s detention decision has set the deadline for filing charges as January 15, 2026. It is possible that Karalahti will be held in pre-trial detention until then.

If charges are brought against Karalahti, the court proceedings will begin within 14 days of the indictment. Karalahti himself denies his guilt regarding the alleged crimes.
