Finnish NHL super prospect moved to North America and played one game – then came the trade
Super promising Finnish forward Luca Santala, 17, signed a contract with the London Knights playing in the OHL in July. However, his time with the team was limited to just one game, as he was traded to another team this week.
Last week, Santala made his debut in London and was traded this week to the Kitchener Rangers, who play in the same league. He played his first game with the team early Saturday morning Finnish time and scored a goal immediately.
Santala is among the most promising young hockey players in Finland. Eligible for next summer’s draft, Santala is projected to be selected in the first round of the NHL.
Before moving to North America, Santala played in the junior teams of Kiekko-Espoo. Last season, he collected 12 points (7+5) in 25 games in the U20 SM-league and 22 points (12+10) in 17 games in the U18 SM-league.
Last spring, Santala also represented the Little Lions in the U18 World Championships, where he recorded 6 points (4+2) in five games.
Santala’s father is former NHL forward Tommi Santala.
