Finnish ex-NHL player has been let go – contract terminated!
The German DEL team Eisbären Berlin has terminated the player contract of Finnish defender Markus Niemeläinen.
Niemeläinen, 28, represented Eisbären for two seasons and won the DEL league championship in both seasons. Niemeläinen suffered injuries during both seasons, playing only 22 games last season with 0+3 points. In the season before that, he played 40 games with 1+6 points.
– We thank Markus for his commitment to Eisbären. He helped us win two championships. Unfortunately, Niemo suffered many injuries that repeatedly hindered his career. However, considering our current roster for the upcoming season, we have mutually agreed to terminate his contract. We wish him and his family all the best, Eisbären’s sports director Stéphane Richer commented in the club’s statement.
Before moving to Germany, Niemeläinen played in North America in the Edmonton Oilers organization. There, he played 43 NHL games with 0+1 points.
In the league, Niemeläinen has represented HPK and Ässät. He won the Finnish championship with HPK in 2019.
