This summer, Patrik Laine is surrounded by increasingly wild trade rumors as he heads to the NHL’s free agency market for the first time in his career.

The Hockey Writers has now joined the Laine speculation with a somewhat wild idea. It sees the Edmonton Oilers as a potential team for the Finnish former NHL goal scorer next season, whose career is currently scraping the bottom after a season that ended with only five games played.

Insider reporter Pierre LeBrun reminds that NHL teams can offer Laine a bonus-heavy contract with a minimal base salary, but whose value could rise by millions of dollars if potential performance bonuses are met.

Such bonuses could be earned based on specific game, goal, and assist totals.

A potential offer from the Oilers could very well entice Laine, as he would likely get significant power-play time as a shooter alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

Laine earned $8.7 million this season. Next season’s salary is believed to plummet close to the NHL minimum, potentially around a million.
