A news bomb dropped from Mestiks: Ketterä is applying for a Liiga license – here are the reasons
Ketterä, which reached the finals of Mestiksen, is seeking a place in next season’s Liiga. The Imatra club announced this on Friday on their website.
– The company’s financial situation has developed positively during the current season, and the current financial indicators meet the criteria for applying for a league license, Ketterä’s statement explains.
Ketterä plans to assemble a budget of 3.3 million euros, of which 1.3 million euros would be used for players. Ketterä’s revenue has hovered between 600,000 and 700,000 euros in recent years, so the increase would be significant.
However, simply raising the budget significantly from this season would not guarantee a Liiga license for the perennial performer of Mestiksen, as the price of a Liiga share is 2.2 million euros.
Ketterä’s home arena also does not meet Liiga’s requirements, as its current venue only accommodates 1,300 spectators. The minimum requirement for Liiga is 4,000 seats, of which 2,500 must be seated.
This problem could likely be solved by the club playing its home games 35 kilometers away in Lappeenranta, where the club will also play its home games for this year’s Mestiksen finals.
