The head coach of the Swedish national team, Rikard Grönborg, may leave the bench within a year, reports Expressen.

This season, the Swedish national team will have an unusual coaching arrangement, where Grönborg’s coaching staff will change between different national team events. Grönborg’s own role may also change later.

According to Swedish media, Grönborg may in the future leave bench work altogether and move to the role of GM in the national team. However, he intends to continue behind the bench for the first year.

– We need some kind of continuity and structure, but let’s see, Grönborg commented to Expressen.

Grönborg emphasizes that decisions are not made solely based on his own preferences.

– This is not about Rikard Grönborg, but about what is best for Tre Kronor. At that point, all options must be on the table, he says.

Sweden has named Tomas Kollari from Malmö Redhawks and Daniel Hermansson from Skellefteå AIK as Grönborg’s assistant coaches for the Nocco Hockey Games tournament to be held in Finland. The goaltending coach will be Timrå’s Nizze Landén.

Grönborg returned as head coach of the Swedish national team after a seven-year break. He previously coached Tre Kronor from 2016 to 2019 and led the team to two world championships. His current contract runs until 2030.

Grönborg coached Tappara for the last three seasons. He led the Tampere club to the Finnish championship twice.
