Sensation at the World Championships – the hero joked: “I hope my car doesn’t catch fire”
In the World Championships, a huge surprise was seen on Saturday night when Slovenia defeated the Czech Republic in overtime with a score of 3-2. The victory was Slovenia’s first against the Czech Republic in the World Championships.
The winning goal for Slovenia was scored in overtime by Marcel Mahkovec. One of the team’s great heroes was also the goalkeeper Lukas Horak, who saved 33 shots in the game.
For Horak, the victory tasted particularly sweet. He was born in the Czech Republic and holds both Slovenian and Czech citizenship.
– I am Czech. I have followed them my whole life, and now I got to play against them for the first time. And we won! I don’t know what to say, I still don’t believe it, Horak reflected to the Czech site Blesk.
– I just hope my car doesn’t catch fire at home, Horak joked.
On the Czech side, the sensational result is considered one of the most humiliating losses in its hockey history.
– We had enough chances to score more goals, but the opponent was more effective. This was a slap in the face. We should have won, Czech forward Jakub Flek said according to Hokej.cz.
For Slovenia, this was the opening match of the tournament. The Czech Republic had already played against Denmark earlier, winning the match.
