IS: MM-dream crushed – Lion player harshly out
Bad news came from the Lions’ World Championship camp on Thursday, as forward Aku Räty had to leave the EHT match against Sweden due to injury.
The 24-year-old Räty played in Finland’s top line alongside Aleksander Barkov, but his evening ended in the first period in Ängelholm. Räty injured his leg in a situation after which he limped to the bench and went to the locker room. He did not return to the game.
Finland ultimately secured a convincing 5–1 victory over Sweden.
The Lions’ head coach Antti Pennanen assessed after the game that the forward’s World Championship dreams are fading due to the injury.
– It seems that he is out [of the tournament], Pennanen confirmed to Ilta-Sanomat.
Räty was strong in his bid to make his first men’s World Championship appearance. He impressed the coaching staff during the national team camps in the spring and at the EHT tournament in Sweden.
Pennanen stated after the game that he wants to support the player during this difficult time.
– I want the player to be seen and heard. Where that conversation goes – I don’t know. I will try hard to support him. He had a great spring and will surely get another opportunity at some point, Pennanen says.
At the same time, Räty’s younger brother Aatu Räty is close to a spot on the Lions’ World Championship team. The brothers had the chance to be part of the same national team group for the first time in Finland’s colors.
