IL: Is this the new head coach of the Young Lions? “Strongly in the running”
The head coach of the Finnish under-20 national team is changing, as the tenure of Lauri Mikkola, who has served for three seasons, comes to an end.
Iltalehti reports based on various sources that Ville Mäntymaa is a strong candidate for the new head coach of the Young Lions.
Mäntymaa, 40, served as an assistant coach for Finland in the recently concluded junior World Championships. He was also an assistant coach for the Young Lions during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. Mäntymaa has also worked as an assistant coach for the Finnish under-18 national team.
In recent years, Mäntymaa worked in Kärpät as both head and assistant coach. He was dismissed from his position as head coach of Kärpät at the end of last season.
Mikkola led the Young Lions to one silver medal and two fourth-place finishes. According to various media reports, he is moving to become the head coach of Vaasan Sport next season.
