First loss for the Young Lions – Czech Republic took the thrilling match in their name
The Young Lions lost their first match in the under-20 World Championships. The Czech Republic defeated Finland in a low-scoring and emotional game after overtime, 2-1.
The match started harshly for Finland. Defender Veeti Väisänen received a penalty just one minute and six seconds into the game when he hit the Czech Tomas Poletin in the face with a cross-check.
During the subsequent five-minute power play, the Czech Republic punished Finland once. The goal scorer was Matej Kubiesa.
The next goal was seen only in the final moments of the match. Finland managed to equalize without a goalkeeper just 20 seconds before the end of regular time with a goal from Emil Hemming. Leo Tuuva and Heikki Ruohonen registered assists on the goal.
The deciding goal in overtime was scored by the Czech Adam Jiricek. He skillfully shot the puck into the net from between his own legs in front of the goal.
In goal for the Young Lions, Petteri Rimpinen was significantly busier than in previous matches. He recorded 24 saves. In goal for the Czech Republic, Michal Orsulak made 23 saves.
In their final group match, the Young Lions will face Canada. The game starts on January 1st at 3:30 AM Finnish time.
