The Washington Capitals have secured one of their most important young players for the coming years.

The team announced on Tuesday an eight-year extension with Ryan Leonard, 21. The total value of the contract is 84 million dollars, making the American forward’s average annual salary 10.5 million dollars.

The new massive contract will take effect when Leonard’s entry-level contract expires next summer.

The Capitals selected Leonard with the eighth overall pick in the 2023 NHL draft. The forward has since quickly risen to a significant position in Washington’s future plans.

Leonard played his first full NHL season last year and recorded 75 regular-season games with a scoring line of 20+25=45.

A strong season also placed Leonard among the NHL’s top rookies. He ranked fifth among rookie players in goals, assists, and total points.
