Vezina finalists announced: The best goalie in the NHL can be found among this trio
The NHL revealed the finalists for the Vezina Trophy awarded to the best goaltender of the season on Wednesday. The trio includes Ilja Sorokin (New York Islanders), Andrei Vasilevski (Tampa Bay Lightning), and Jeremy Swayman (Boston Bruins).
Sorokin had a strong season, recording 29 wins. His statistics show a save percentage of 90.6 and a goals-against average of 2.68. Additionally, the Russian recorded as many as seven shutouts. The Vezina Trophy would be the first of his career.
Swayman is also seeking his first trophy. The 27-year-old recorded 31 wins in the regular season with a save percentage of 90.8% and a goals-against average of 2.71.
The most experienced name in the group is Vasilevski, who secured 39 wins – the most in the entire NHL. The 2019 award winner and six-time Vezina finalist played at an elite level again: goals-against average of 2.12 and a save percentage of 91.2.
One big name is missing from the list. Last season’s winner, Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets, was left out of the finalist trio this time.
