Unpleasant news from the NHL for the Lions Olympic team
Buffalo Sabres’ Finnish goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was injured during the NHL game against the Toronto Maple Leafs and had to leave the match early in the first period.
Luukkonen’s game ended after 12 minutes of play. When Auston Matthews scored the 2-1 goal, Luukkonen tried to stretch for the puck and injured himself in the process. After the incident, Luukkonen played for just over a minute before leaving the ice.
Sabres announced that Luukkonen is suffering from a lower body injury. Head coach Lindy Ruff stated that Luukkonen will be examined by doctors on Wednesday, after which more information about the Finnish player’s condition will be available.
Sabres replaced him with Colten Ellis, who helped secure the team’s victory with a score of 7-4.
Luukkonen has played 21 games this season with a save percentage of 90.3. He is also part of the Lions’ Olympic team. The tournament for Finland starts in two weeks.
