Unpleasant news has emerged about a Finnish NHL prospect.
Finnish goaltender Topias Leinonen, who plays for the Buffalo Sabres organization, is suffering from a lower body injury he sustained during summer training. This was reported by the head coach of Buffalo’s AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans, Michael Leone.
Due to his injury, Leinonen had to withdraw from Buffalo’s young players’ camp this weekend. According to Leone, Leinonen will be out of action for a while, but he could not provide a specific timeline for the Finnish player’s return at this stage.
Leinonen, 22, was a second-round draft pick for Buffalo in the summer of 2022. He signed an entry-level contract in the spring of 2025 and just completed his first season in North America. Last season, Leinonen played eight games in the AHL with a save percentage of 85.5, and seven games with the ECHL team Jacksonville Icemen with a save percentage of 88.0.
Before last season, Leinonen played one season in the Allsvenskan with Mora IK. Prior to that, he represented JYP in the Liiga.
"He's going to miss a little time ... I don't have any details of how long it's going to be."
