Tuukka Rask made his assessment – here is the next Finnish NHL top goaltender
TAMPERE. One of the best goalkeepers in the history of Finnish hockey, Tuukka Rask, was honored as a Hockey Lion on Saturday during the EHT tournament in Tampere.
Having played fifteen seasons with the Boston Bruins and once named the best goalkeeper in the NHL during his career, Rask played only 14 A-international matches for the Lions. The selection as a Hockey Lion warmed the heart of the hockey legend particularly for this reason.
– It’s a humble feeling. Not everyone gets this kind of honor. When you look at that room and see what kind of legends were in the audience, it really makes you humble, Rask admitted after the gala.
Rask, who named the Olympic bronze from 2014 as his best national team memory, has been following Finnish goalkeeper production with some concern. There hasn’t been a rush to the NHL’s elite goalkeepers like in previous years.
– Of course Juuse Saros and Luukkonen’s Upi are doing well. We have goalkeepers, but we need more. Finland is known worldwide for its goalkeepers. It has been perhaps a bit quieter now than it was in the early to mid-2000s.
– New ones will definitely come at some point. Finns are the kind of people who like to defend, and the role of a goalkeeper fits that well, Rask assessed.
Rask is looking forward to the next Finnish NHL starting goalkeeper, who he expects to come from last season’s Liiga sensation, drafted in the 5th round by the Los Angeles Kings last summer.
– Petteri Rimpinen, Kiekko-Espoo, the goalkeeper legend shares his own assessment.
