This is how the partner opens up about the change that happened with Antti Pennanen: “It feels like…”
ZÜRICH. A year ago at the World Championships in Stockholm, one of the biggest topics of discussion was the uncertain and nervous demeanor of the Lions’ head coach Antti Pennanen both on the bench and in interviews.
This spring, things have changed. Even at the Olympics, Pennanen exuded confidence, which was also evident in his strong coaching performance behind the Lions’ bench and quick reactions during critical moments of the matches.
Pennanen himself is not keen to talk about it. Leijonat.com interviewed the Lions’ long-time assistant coach Mikko Manner on Friday, who shed some light on the matter.
During Manner’s time with the Lions, there have been three different head coaches. According to him, it always takes some time for a new coach to get things rolling.
– Every coach needs successes, every team needs successes, so that the best common version of all of us can emerge, Manner says.
– I think we are on the right track. The Olympics were great, and succeeding there was wonderful. It has certainly helped our whole team and also Antti, so he can enjoy it. Because really, coaching should be enjoyable, just like with you [the media], and not just waiting for someone to ask tricky questions.
Manner also sees a change compared to before.
– It feels like Antti’s confidence has grown, and he is at his best right now.
