The Stanley Cup winner’s contract was torn up at a rapid pace – a huge bill for the SHL club
Färjestad’s decision to terminate the contract of Stanley Cup winner Cal Foote, 27, just a couple of days after acquiring him at the end of July turned out to be costly for the SHL club.
Foote was one of the five players embroiled in the gang rape allegations that shook Canada in 2018. Although the court found the quintet not guilty, the signing of the defenseman immediately sparked such a fierce backlash among Färjestad fans that the club’s management decided to terminate the Canadian’s contract at a rapid pace.
Aftonbladet now reveals the price tag of the decision.
According to the Swedish newspaper, Färjestad will have to pay Foote a total of 3.5 million kronor, which converts to 317,000 euros. The defenseman received a hefty signing bonus of 180,000 euros from his contract.
The remainder of the amount consists of Foote’s monthly salary and compensation related to the contract termination.
Foote has played 145 NHL games in his career. He was part of the team that won the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2021.
