The sensational performance of Norway in the ice hockey World Championships continued on Monday evening when the team defeated the Czech Republic. This victory was already the second major surprise for the Norwegians in the same tournament, as they had previously also beaten Sweden.

This historic result means that Norway advances to the quarter-finals for the first time in 14 years. At the same time, the entire group situation has changed – and the effects extend directly to the Lions.

For Finland, the most significant change is that the team no longer has to calculate the result of the last match. The previously speculated tactical loss to Switzerland is no longer a realistic or necessary option, as Norway’s rise has mixed up the standings.

Norway still has the chance to climb to second place in its group if it wins the final round against Denmark. In this case, Norway would not face Finland in the quarter-finals at all.

At the moment, the most likely opponents for the Lions are the Czech Republic, Sweden, and Slovakia. Among these, the mutual match between Sweden and Slovakia takes on a decisive role, as Sweden needs a regulation time victory to secure a spot in the next round.

If the favorites handle their last round matches as expected, the top of the group will be as follows: Canada will win the group, Norway will place second, the Czech Republic third, and Sweden fourth. Slovakia would then finish fifth and be eliminated from the playoffs.

Finland’s last group match against Switzerland will directly determine the quarter-final opponent: the winner will face Sweden, while the loser will meet the Czech Republic.

Norway can only end up as Finland’s opponent if it stumbles in its final match against Denmark.
