The player who switched teams after being the NHL’s second overall pick struck it rich – a contract worth tens of millions.
The Calgary Flames have secured their top summer acquisition Simon Nemec with a long and valuable contract extension in the NHL.
The 22-year-old Slovak defenseman, recently traded from the New Jersey Devils to Calgary, signed a five-year contract extension on Monday, with a total value of $36.25 million. The deal guarantees the NHL’s second overall pick from the summer of 2022 an average annual income of $7.25 million.
Last season, Nemec played 68 regular-season games in a Devils uniform, recording stats of 11+15=26.
The Flames acquired the 185-centimeter defenseman as part of a massive player trade. In addition to Nemec, Calgary also received forward Maksim Tsyplakov. Heading to the Devils were defenseman Etienne Morin, a second-round draft pick in 2026, and two top 10 protected first-round draft picks for 2027 and 2028.
For the rebuilding Flames, Nemec is set to take on a top defenseman role next season.
