The publicity-shy former NHL star goalie Miikka Kiprusoff has given a public interview for the first time in years.

The 49-year-old Turku legend attended the funeral of the local NHL team’s Flames’ broadcasting icon Peter Maher over the weekend in Calgary.

Maher started as a radio reporter in the 1980s and retired only in 2014. The broadcasting legend passed away at the age of 79 on Thursday.

Several former Flames players, including Kiprusoff, also attended Maher’s funeral. Kiprusoff, who traveled from Finland for the funeral, described the broadcasting icon in beautiful words.

– He was involved with the Flames for a long time, of course also when I was there.

– I have always respected him a lot. He was a great guy, so it is an honor to be here. He was always with us and traveled with us. I really liked him, Kiprusoff recalled in a video.

Kiprusoff himself played in the NHL for 12 seasons. The goalie represented the Flames from 2003 until the end of his career in the spring of 2013.

The Finn who once led the Flames to the Stanley Cup finals was awarded the NHL’s best goalie Vezina Trophy in the summer of 2006.
