Oilers’ own legend saw who the team hired – “I am in shock”
Edmonton Oilers’ team legend Mark Messier criticizes the team’s decision to hire Mike Babcock as their head coach. He spoke about it on Wednesday at an ESPN media event.
– I am completely shocked that they hired him. I have heard from very reliable and respected people how they have been treated. This has not been a secret, Messier stated.
Messier is also concerned about how the Oilers came to their choice. According to TSN, the team discussed the coach with, among others, Connor McDavid, Zach Hyman, and Leon Draisaitl. Messier asks who other players can turn to later if there are issues with the coach’s actions.
– The team’s leading players need to protect the other players in the locker room. How can that happen if they are directly involved in management’s coaching decisions? I don’t understand that.
Babcock’s tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets ended in 2023 before the start of the regular season following a privacy scandal involving players’ phones. Before Edmonton’s decision, the NHL investigated his actions in Columbus and found no grounds to restrict his coaching in the league.
The outcome of the investigation did not change Messier’s stance.
– To be honest, I am horrified by the whole thing. I could go on about this forever, but I believe you understand my point.
Messier’s jersey number 11 has been retired in Edmonton, and his shirt hangs from the ceiling of the Oilers’ home arena.
