The NHL’s flop team made its choice – here is the new GM!
Florida Panthers’ long-time assistant GM Sunny Mehta is leaving the reigning champion team to take on new challenges. The New Jersey Devils announced on Friday that they have hired Mehta as their new general manager.
Mehta takes the position from Tom Fitzgerald, who was fired in early April. Fitzgerald became the GM of the Devils in the 2019-20 season.
The 48-year-old Mehta is known in NHL circles as a true stats guru, whose influence was strongly reflected in the Panthers’ success. He worked with the team for six seasons, the last three as assistant GM and head of analytics.
The results speak for themselves: the Panthers reached the Stanley Cup Finals in every season Mehta served as assistant GM and celebrated championships in 2024 and 2025.
Mehta’s NHL career began as an advisor for the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2010–11 season. The Devils organization is familiar to the stats guru, as he served as the team’s director of analytics from 2014 to 2018 before moving to Florida.
