The megastore collapsed in the NHL – the superstar blocked the trade of Mikko Rantanen to Dallas!
The winner of last season’s best defenseman award in the NHL, Zach Werenski, has blocked a potential trade to the Dallas Stars.
According to Sportsnet, a verbal agreement had been reached between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Dallas for a player trade, where Werenski would move to the Stars and 24-year-old defenseman Thomas Harley would travel in the opposite direction. The deal likely would have included other players and draft picks.
However, the trade fell through because 28-year-old Werenski has a no-trade clause in his contract, and he refused to waive it for Dallas.
The trade was set to take place Wednesday evening Finnish time. According to Sportsnet, Dallas was unaware that the trade would collapse due to the clause, and they only learned about it late Wednesday night Finnish time.
According to TSN, Werenski hopes to continue his career in the Eastern Conference. Potential future destinations mentioned include the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning.
Werenski has represented the Columbus Blue Jackets throughout his entire NHL career. He has risen to the elite of the league over the past two seasons and has been scoring at a rate of over a point per game. Last season, he played 75 games with stats of 22+59=81.
Several Finns play for the Dallas Stars, including Mikko Rantanen, Roope Hintz, Esa Lindell, and Miro Heiskanen.
His #CBJ situation seems to be devolving. Werenski never formally requested a trade, but has had honest talks about the future since April.
