The organization of the 2027 Ice Hockey World Championships has become a topic of discussion in Germany due to the potential return of Russia.

The German Ice Hockey Federation is now even considering giving up the World Championship hosting rights if Russia is allowed back into international tournaments.

This issue was reported on Sunday by the German media Süddeutsche Zeitung and Eurosport.

According to the CEO of the German Ice Hockey Federation, Frank H. Lutz, Russia’s participation could cause significant problems for the organizers.

– I don’t want to be a pessimist, but we naturally have to consider the possibility that we might completely give up the World Championships, Lutz commented.

Concerns are particularly focused on security arrangements and the costs they would incur. Russia’s participation could require significant additional measures that would increase the financial risks of the tournament.

The background to the situation is the ruling of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which has made Russia’s return to international tournaments a current issue.

Germany is set to host the 2027 World Championships in Düsseldorf and Mannheim. Russia has been barred from international ice hockey activities since the onset of the Ukraine invasion in February 2022.

The German Ice Hockey Federation has not yet made an official decision to give up the hosting rights.
